What is PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease)?

PCOD is a hormonal disorder in which the ovaries produce immature or partially mature eggs, which over time turn into cysts. It leads to irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalance, and difficulty in ovulation. PCOD is one of the most common causes of infertility in women of reproductive age.

Symptoms of PCOD
  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Excessive facial or body hair (hirsutism)
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Mood swings or depression
  • Difficulty conceiving (infertility)
  • Darkening of skin in neck, groin, or underarms
Causes & Triggers :
  • Hormonal imbalance (elevated androgens)
  • Insulin resistance
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Poor dietary habits
  • Stress and sleep disturbances
  • Genetic predisposition
Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, PCOD is considered a disorder of Kapha and Vata doshas, along with impaired Agni (digestive fire). The imbalance causes Ama (toxins) to accumulate, leading to obstruction in Artava Vaha Srotas (reproductive channels). Ayurvedic treatment aims to balance hormones, improve digestion, detoxify the body, and restore normal ovulation.

Diagnosis
  • Ultrasound to detect multiple small cysts in the ovaries
  • Blood tests for hormone levels (LH, FSH, testosterone, insulin)
  • Assessment of menstrual history, physical symptoms, and BMI
Dietary & Lifestyle Recommendations
  • Follow a balanced, Kapha-pacifying diet (light, warm, and freshly cooked meals)
  • Avoid processed, fried, and sugary foods
  • Include whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fruits (avoid too much banana, mango, and dairy)
  • Drink warm water and avoid cold or carbonated beverages
  • Practice regular physical activity like yoga, brisk walking, or cardio
  • Manage stress through meditation, pranayama, or Abhyanga (oil massage)
  • Herbal formulations like Ashoka, Shatavari, Triphala, and Trikatu may be beneficial under supervision
